Each region of the country is famous for various styles of cuisine. No matter the type of food you enjoy, you must try it in each area of the country as the cooking methods and ingredients will change.

Something as ‘simple’ as pizza will be vastly different than what you’re used to at home. The texture of the crust, type and amount of sauce, as well as the diverse toppings, will make your mouth water and beg for more.

2. Vino From the Source

A trip to Italy is not complete without sampling the local wines. Instead of simply ordering a bottle of table red at dinner, you can choose to tour a vineyard to taste the variations of famed vintners.

Even if you know little to nothing about Italian wines, there are many educational tools to learn about them before your trip. Or, you can take a crash course once you arrive and sample varieties until you find one that is enjoyable.

3. Works of Art

At some point in your life, you have seen a few famous Italian works of art. These paintings and sculptures are often seen in jet-setting movies, taught about in college classes, and depicted in magazines.

When you vacation in Italy, you can see these prominent images and figures for yourself. A few must-sees include works by Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Michelangelo, and Botticelli.

4. Ancient & Iconic Architecture

One of the first buildings you likely think of when you think ‘Italy’ is the Tower of Pisa. When you plan your trip, this landmark should be on your checklist–along with a photo that makes it appear as though you are holding it up.

Aside from the Tower, there is the Colosseum, the Pantheon, the Rialto and Ponte Vecchio bridges, and the Trevi Fountain. Each of these picture-perfect pieces of architecture can be found in varying areas of the country, namely Florence, Rome, Venice, and Tuscany.

6. Greek Mythology & Roman History

Given that there are so many ancient buildings and pieces of art, you can guess that there is plenty of history to go along with them.

The Greeks were some of the first people to settle in Italy around 700 to 600 BC. Their mythology includes the likes of Zeus, Appolo, and Poseidon. The gods and goddesses throughout their history have been used in many famous literary works.

Additionally, you can learn about the Romans, their conquests, belief systems, and of course, their namesake city, Rome.

7. Remote Islands & Picturesque Beaches

If you are looking for a more relaxing vacation, with fewer history lessons and more sun & fun, this country has that too!

Italy is home to islands such as Elba, Stromboli, Capri, Sardinia, and Sicily, to name a few. Each of these places is as varied as the foods found in the country. Some are highly popular and touristy, while others are much quieter.

Regardless of the island you choose to visit, you will never be far from white, sandy beaches and crystal, blue water. You may even see a celebrity or two!

8. Alpine Lakes & Surrounding Mountains

The beach isn’t appealing to all vacationers. Some may prefer to spend their time hiking in the mountains and enjoying untouched lakes.

Italy is home to several famous mountains and multiple active volcanoes. While checking out some of these areas, consider taking a walking tour of Pompeii. This city is well-preserved due to the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD and offers an interesting view of what life was like during that time.

Should you choose to take a winter Italian trip, you will be happy to find several ski resorts, offering some of the finest snow-covered slopes. Because there are so many mountainous areas in the country, the costs are competitive.

9. Awe-Inspiring Cathedrals

You may be planning less of a vacation to Italy and more of a pilgrimage if you are religious. There is no shortage of beautiful cathedrals to visit, with many of these sites still being active places of worship.

This website offers tours of the most popular cathedrals as well as skip-the-line tickets. Regardless of your itinerary, paying to skip the line is always worth it when queues can take 3 or more hours.
