Butter Beans

The sides are just as important as the main course, and that’s why the first recipe we’re going to share with you is a recipe known as ham hock and beans. Before you get started, you need to gather a few ingredients, including:

  • Ham hock
  • Butter beans
  • Vegetable shortening
  • Okra
  • Salt and pepper
  • Garlic powder
  • Onion
  • Red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Onion
  • Bell pepper

The first thing you need to do is clean your ham hocks and then place them in a large pot to cook. Add in your spices, including salt, garlic powder, onion, and peppers.

You’re going to bring this mixture to a boil and then reduce it to a simmer to give the meat enough time to cook thoroughly.

Step 2

After the meat has been cooked, remove it from the pot and remove the meat from the ham hock. After removing the meat, return it to the pot that you will be cooking the beans in.

Take your washed butter beans and place them in the pot. Add your shortening, sugar, and okra. Allow the pot to simmer until the beans have been cooked to your liking.

Buttermilk Southern Fried Chicken

There is no better main course than fried chicken. It’s been the staple of several southern dinner courses for generations.

You will need:

  • Chicken
  • Flour
  • Salt
  • Baking powder

  • Vegetable oil
  • Buttermilk

Take the chicken that you’re going to fry and place it in a bowl. Cover the chicken with the buttermilk and place it in the refrigerator to marinate.

Heat your oil in a cast-iron skillet to prepare to fry the chicken.

Step 2:

While the chicken is marinating, you need to get a Ziploc bag. Fill the bag with some flour, salt, black pepper, baking powder, and garlic powder.

Take the chicken out of the refrigerator. Put each piece in the bag to cover with flour.

Step 3:

Once the oil has reached medium-high heat, place 1-2 pieces of chicken in the skillet to fry. Turn the chicken to ensure that all sides are fried evenly.

Depending on the part of the chicken you’re frying, the time it takes to cook will differ.
